This is the brush that lives by the sofa, not the one that comes out before a show. Rounded pins on a flexible rubber cushion, which means it flexes over ribs and hips instead of dragging, and a dog that hates being groomed will usually tolerate it.
It is for daily maintenance on short and medium coats: lifting loose hair, spreading skin oils down the shaft, and finding the lumps, ticks and hot spots you would otherwise notice a week late. Five minutes an evening does more for a coat than an hour once a month.
It is not a de-shedding tool and it will not open a matted double coat. For that you need a comb and patience, or a groomer. Trying to force a slicker or this brush through a formed mat pulls at the skin and is how dogs learn to run away from the grooming drawer.
The handle is a flattened oval with a thumb rest, which matters if you have any wrist trouble. Wash the pad in warm water occasionally and let it dry pins-down; hair and oil build up under the pins and that is what makes an old brush feel scratchy.
