Oatmeal Soothing Dog Shampoo

Dog skin sits around pH 7, human skin around pH 5.5. That is the whole reason human shampoo is a bad idea on a dog: it is formulated acidic, and repeated use strips the acid mantle a dog does not have to begin with. This is built at pH 7.2 and does nothing clever beyond that.

Colloidal oatmeal is the active part, and it is one of the few soothing ingredients with decent evidence behind it. It forms a film that reduces water loss and calms the itch and scratch cycle for a few days. It is symptom relief, not a cure, and it works best on a dog that has been washed and thoroughly rinsed.

Dilute it 1:8 in a jug of warm water before it goes near the dog. Neat shampoo is hard to spread, harder to rinse out and is the usual reason a dog is itchier after a bath than before it. A 500ml bottle at that dilution is around twenty washes for a medium dog.

Rinse for twice as long as you think you need to, then once more along the belly and between the back legs where residue collects. If the itch is constant, seasonal, or comes with hair loss, red skin or a smell, that is a vet appointment. Allergy, mites and yeast all look identical from the outside and none of them is a shampoo problem.
