A cat arriving in a new home is not settling in; it is assessing a threat. The single most useful thing you can do on day one is give it one small room with a closed door, a place to hide, food and a tray far apart from each other, and then mostly leave it alone. This box is built around that plan rather than around a shopping list.

Inside: six litres of plant-fibre clumping litter, an open tray, a 1.5kg bag of adult cat kibble, a twelve-pouch multipack, a flat sisal scratch pad, a cardboard hide, and a two-sided card that sets out the first week hour by hour for the first day and day by day after that.

The hide is the piece people leave out and it is arguably the most important. A cat with a box to sit inside decompresses in days; a cat with nowhere to go stays under a bed for weeks and eats at three in the morning. It is a cardboard box, it costs us almost nothing, and it changes the whole first fortnight.
